Dragon Ball Z Volume 2 picks up where the first volume left off, diving headlong into the Saiyan Saga. Goku has completed his grueling training under the wise King Kai on the Other World, mastering the powerful Kaioken technique and the Spirit Bomb. Meanwhile, on Earth, his friends and family brace for the arrival of the Saiyan warriors Nappa and Vegeta.
When the Saiyans finally land, they unleash devastating power. Nappa, the hulking brute, easily defeats the Z-fighters, leaving Piccolo, Krillin, Yamcha, and Tien and even Chaozu broken and dying. In a moment of ultimate sacrifice, Piccolo throws himself in front of Gohan to save the young half-Saiyan, only to be impaled by Nappa's attack. With Piccolo's death, the Dragon Balls vanish forever sealing the fate of their fallen friends.
Just when all hope seems lost, Goku arrives in a blinding flash of speed. Using the Kaioken technique, he overwhelms Nappa and forces the cowardly warrior to flee only to be executed by his own prince, Vegeta. Now the stage is set for an epic one-on-one showdown between Goku and the ruthless Prince Vegeta.
Vegeta, confident and arrogant, transforms into the legendary Great Ape (Oozaru) using his artificial moon, but Goku counters with the Kaioken layered on top of his Kamehameha wave. The battle escalates to desperate heights, culminating in a beam struggle that shakes the planet. When Gohan, Krillin, and Yajirobe manage to cut off Vegeta's tail, the prince reverts to his normal size, wounded and furious.
In a final act of desperation, Goku prepares the Spirit Bomb, gathering energy from all life on Earth. But Vegeta is too fast he nearly destroys Goku before Gohan hurls the spirit bomb back at him. The battle ends with Vegeta retreating, broken but alive, swearing revenge. Goku is left badly injured, and the surviving heroes mourn their losses.
